Consistency Over Perfection: Why Getting Back Up Is What Matters Most

Let’s be honest—these past few weeks have been rough. Not just for my clients, but for me, too.
Yes, me, the coach. The one who teaches women how to support their hormones, build strength, and create sustainable habits. I’ve found myself slipping:
Skipping my morning walks
Grabbing convenience food over nourishing meals
Letting my evening routine fade into Netflix and scrolling
And you know what? That doesn’t make me a bad coach. It makes me human.
Because despite what social media might make us think, consistency isn’t about showing up perfectly every single day. It’s about choosing to return—again and again—to the habits that support your health, even when life feels messy, unpredictable, or downright exhausting.
Why We Fall Off Track (Even When We “Know Better”)
You might wonder: If I know what works, why is it so hard to keep doing it?
Rachel Friedman from Mindstrong Fitness has a powerful explanation rooted in neuroscience. The short version? Our brains are not wired for “discipline”—they’re wired for efficiency and comfort.
Every behavior we repeat creates a pathway in the brain. Over time, that pathway becomes like a well-worn trail—easy to follow, effortless to stay on. That’s what habits are. But when we stop walking that trail—say, we miss a few workouts, stop meal prepping, or get overwhelmed and default to scrolling—those pathways start to fade.
Meanwhile, old patterns—like skipping meals, staying up too late, or numbing with distractions—become tempting again because they’re familiar. They require less energy for your brain to access.
That’s not weakness. That’s biology.
The good news? Your brain is constantly rewiring. And every time you choose to walk the trail again—no matter how long it’s been—you begin to reinforce the new pattern.
You Are Not Starting Over
This is the mindset shift I return to, both for myself and the women I coach:
You’re not starting over. You’re resuming—with more self-awareness, resilience, and data than before.
So often we frame a “slip” as failure. But I want to reframe that for you: A slip is feedback. It’s insight. It’s an opportunity to observe what you actually need right now.
Did you overcommit yourself? Were your expectations too rigid? Did your nervous system need rest more than structure?
This isn’t about shame. This is about curiosity.
How to Rebuild Consistency After a Rough Patch
Let’s ground this in practical steps. If you’re feeling off-track or overwhelmed, here’s how to gently reconnect to your routine:
1. Ask: What support do I need right now? Before you jump into action, pause. Tune in. Do you need rest? Nourishment? Boundaries? Start there.
2. Anchor one small habit. Don't try to overhaul everything. Pick the smallest habit that helps you feel steady.
Drink water when you wake up
Take a 5-minute walk outdoors
Stretch before bed
Prep breakfast the night before
Choose one—and repeat it daily.
3. Track it—but with compassion. This isn’t about perfection. It’s about noticing. Tracking helps you reconnect with what’s working (and what’s not), without judgment. You don’t need a complicated spreadsheet. A sticky note or simple checklist works just fine.
4. Say it out loud: "This is what getting back on track looks like. I’m doing it.” Give yourself credit. You’re showing up—and that’s the whole point.
Real Talk from a Coach Who Gets It
I’ve been in this work long enough to know that motivation isn’t the magic—it’s the byproduct. It comes after you take the action, not before.
I’ve also learned that most women in midlife are tired of being told to “try harder. "We don’t need more pressure. We need more support. We need more tools that work with our hormones, energy, and season of life—not against them.
That’s what Rekindle with Kim is here for.
You don’t need to do everything. You just need to do something. Then repeat. Let it compound. Let your wins stack quietly, until one day you realize—you're not just back on track... you’re thriving.
